Practical information

In the town of Obzor you can find:

Obzor`s pharmacy can be found on the main road. Opening hours are from 8:30 -18:00 and in the high season 8:30-22:00.

Newspapers

It is not possible to buy Scandinavian newspapers in Obzor but it is possible to use the internet to get updated while visiting one of the internet cafés.

Bank/ ATM/ exchange bureaus

There are some exchange bureaus, but the exchanging rates vary and these exchanging offices charge you for the exchange. The bank is open from Monday to Friday from 09.00-12.00 o’clock. There is a bank automat beside the entrance. The banks normally have better exchanging rates than the exchange offices. We strongly recommend you not to exchange money with the so-called “exchangers on black”.

Renting a car

It is rather expensive to rent a car in Bulgaria and if you cannot read the Cyrillic alphabet it might be difficult to understand the signs along the way.

If you do not want to drive by yourself but still wants to see more of Bulgaria we recommend you to use a taxi service (agree on a price in advance).

Tips

There is no regular system regarding the tips in Bulgaria. If you are satisfied with the service you could round the sum up or you can give approx. 10 % of the bill in tips.

Drinking water

The tap water is drinkable but tastes often of chlorine. Instead you can buy mineral water nearly everywhere and a bottle costs approx. 5 DKK.

Power supply

The power supply in Bulgaria is 220 V.

Credit cards

Only a few restaurants and shops accept credit cards. Instead we recommend you to withdraw the wished amount from the bank automat.

Post office

Postcards and stamps can be bought in some towns and the tourist areas. The postage for sending a postcard in Europe is 70 stotinki.

Telephone

The cheapest way to make a phone call to Denmark is from the post office. It is open from 08.00-12.00 and 12.30-16.00. You can also use a phone booth or buy a calling card. The price is around nine DKK a minute to Denmark.

There are two kinds of coin-box telephones; Mobika (blue) and Bulfon (orange). Calling cards can be bought almost every where, and the price is 4-20 leva. Press 0045 + the subscriber’ number. The GSM-system is very well organised in Bulgaria and it is reliably working.

Time difference

Bulgaria has a time lead of 1 hour compared to Denmark because of the East European time.

Toilets

The toilets are not always equipped with toilet paper. In most places you will have to pay for a toilet visit - also in the restaurants. One visit costs approx. 30 stotinka.

Transportation

There are good bus connections between the towns. From the city square in Obzor the buses drive to Sozopol, Burgas and Varna. It takes more time to ride in the municipal bus because it has several more stopping places stops on its route than the minibuses. In the bus you have to validate your ticket in the automatic machine.

The taxies are yellow and supplied with a taximeter and automatically coming receipts. Agree on a certain price if you have to go on the longer trip.

Currency

The Bulgarian currency is called Leva. 1 Leva consists of 100 stotinki. One Leva corresponds approx. to 3,80 DKK or 0,5 Euro.

Opening hours

The opening hours for the shops in Obzor vary, but normally they are open during the late morning and in the afternoon. Still many shops are open until 10 o’clock in the evening. In the tourist areas the shops are most often open all day both including in the weekends.

Restaurants and Bulgarian kitchen

The Bulgarian kitchen can somewhat be compared with the Greek and Turkish kitchens. The taste of meat or fish and sunny vegetables enriched with piquant sauces. Garlic, bee-honey, sheep cheese and yogurt are among the main ingredients together with the fresh herbs. You will get a very delicious and traditional sheep cheese salad, if you order shopska, while banitsa is a kind of butter tart with spinach, yogurt and cheese. Kavarma is the saturating dish with meat, vegetables and chilli. The delicious meat rolls are called kebapcheta. For desert you can try mekitsas, a kind of deep fried pancake with cheese, honey and nuts.

Wine

You can advantageously buy wine in Bulgaria. Many good wines are produced here, both red and white. You can also try one of the red sparkling wines.

Out of the many known wine districts in Bulgaria Tjernomorskij is the nearest to Obzor. It is situated in the Bourgas region and produces many delicious red wines from the wine sort Cabernet Sauvignon. An example is the St. Kiril which is named after the holly man that invented the Cyrillic alphabet.

When you are in Bulgaria, you should also try the wines from Plovdiv and Assenovgrad. They are produced from one of Bulgaria’s exclusive wine sort, which is the grape Mavrud. A popular white wine is Misket Karlovo and as one of the sparkling wines we will recommend Iskra.

Do you prefer beer?

Zagorka is a light but strong beer and is perfect to allay the thirst.

Shopping

There are many good shopping possibilities in Bulgaria. You can buy clothing, shoes, CD and DVDs with different games. In general the shops are not closed during the siesta in the middle of the day. Remember many things sold in the tourist areas can be fakes.

Hand craft

In the town of Obzor there are many little shops offering souvenirs, clothing and bathing articles for a reasonable prise. Bulgaria is famous for its very fine hand craft like tree sculptures and hand carved things. You can find beautiful hand craft work, different kinds of covers or carpets on different markets. The Bulgarians are also famous for their fine crystals. In the most of the small towns there are many shops with crystal glass, vases and other thing of a good quality. In many places beautiful paintings are also sold and maybe if you like to have made a portrait of you during the vacation, this is a good place to ask. One of the most popular things to bring home from Bulgaria is rosewater, rose oil and other beauty products, made from roses. Icons, holly pictures and other religious motives painted on tree can also be found in a lot of places in Bulgaria.
